Gather up the family, pack your swimsuit and get ready for good times of all kinds on Kenya’s glorious southeastern coast. Don’t forget your camera! You’ll want to capture every moment of the fun as you make your way from your acclaimed spa-resort in Diani Beach to idyllic Wasini Island — and beyond — during an amazing daytrip that features sightseeing, snorkeling and other activities.
Starting at the tiny port town of Shimoni, board a dhow boat, a traditional Arabian-style sailing vessel, and set off to Kisite Mpunguti Marine National Park. Known for frequent dolphin and turtle sightings, these pristine coral reefs off the southern coast of Wasini Island offer ideal conditions for snorkeling. Spectacular marine life abounds here — including more than 200 species of dolphin — so chances are good that you’ll see something enchanting under the surface of the shimmering waters, like schools of parrotfish, snappers, angel fish and more.
Enjoy lunch on the island itself, then visit Coral Gardens where you can stroll along the boardwalk that’s maintained and operated by a group of women as a fundraiser for their village. The boardwalk winds through mangroves and offers views of these breathtaking coral formations. From there, you’ll return to the mainland and visit the “slave caves” in Shimoni — used to hold escapees before they could be returned to the slave markets — and Shimoni Slave Museum. After you’ve had time to reflect on the dark days of colonialism and slavery, you’ll be ushered back to the resort for free time on your own.
Luckily, your resort is the perfect place to hang out, offering something enjoyable to suit every taste. Why not start with a leisurely walk through the resort’s tropical gardens? It’s a great place to spot local wildlife! Or, find your ideal spot on the beach, lounge with a cocktail by the pool, or get active with on-site water sports — perhaps kayaking or windsurfing! (Some activities are at an additional cost.) If you’d rather, you can do yoga, pamper yourself with some soothing spa time (at your own expense) and take in the daily and nightly entertainment — the choice of activity is entirely up to you!
